With a degree in Fine Art from Humberside, Matt has perhaps unusually for an illustrator a working knowledge of science and mathematics and an active curiosity about the inner workings of the universe.
He has written and illustrated throughout the internationally successful books “Compact Cosmos”, a little look at the entire universe, and “Essential Elements“, a primer on chemistry and quantum physics. Both titles are featured in “Sciencia“, a multiple book bind-up by award-winning Wooden Books, published globally by Bloomsbury USA.
Other books illustrated for the series have included maths, biology, NLP, and science subjects, poetry, an outer space children’s story and a compendium of literally “Every Trick In The Book”. He is currently writing and illustrating “Time – a Tiny Tour”, a quick glimpse at the temporal.
Another intriguing project has been the extensive “Secrets of Creation” by mathematician Dr Matthew Watkins. With nearly a thousand illustrations and a Jungian comic strip, the trilogy explores the deep mysteries of prime number theory in an accessible way.
Other commissions have included a graphic novelisation of the first 13.6 billion years of the universe, a German inventor’s book on quantum physics, a richly illustrated rum-running pirate game, logos for an American wingsuit company and numerous one-off designs for greetings cards, posters and signage.
Versatile, with an engaging visual style, Matt enjoys a challenge and is used to working closely with authors to develop easily comprehended illustrations to complex concepts. His art employs a combination of old and new, mixing the precision of computer graphics and multiple layering with traditional pen and ink textures.
